Geography | KS1 | KS2 | The water cycle | BBC Teach

This film explores the water cycle: what it is and how it works. It follows the journey of water and how it starts in rivers, lakes and oceans, evaporates and condenses, then falls as precipitation and runs back into rivers, lakes and oceans.

🌍 Spring 2 – Geography Overview 🌍

This half term, our Geography learning will focus on water and the important role it plays in our world. We will explore where water comes from, different types of bodies of water and why some are created by humans.

πŸ’§ What We’re Learning

Our key enquiry questions are:

  • How do we get water?

  • How are seas and lakes different?

  • Are all bodies of water naturally formed?

  • Why do humans create bodies of water?

We will be learning about:

  • The basic water cycle (linked to our weather learning)

  • Different bodies of water: sea, ocean, coast, canal, river, port and harbour

  • The difference between physical (natural) and human features

  • Using aerial photographs to identify and describe bodies of water

  • How water is transported to our homes

🧠 Skills We’re Developing

  • Asking geographical questions

  • Using simple maps and aerial photographs

  • Identifying human and physical features

  • Comparing different types of bodies of water

  • Using key geographical vocabulary accurately

  • Understanding simple processes such as the water cycle

🏑 How You Can Support at Home

You can help your child by:

  • 🌦️ Talking about the weather and discussing rain and evaporation

  • πŸ—ΊοΈ Looking at maps or online maps to spot rivers, seas and canals

  • 🚰 Discussing where tap water comes from

  • 🌊 Visiting a local river, lake or coast (if possible) and talking about its features

  • πŸ“š Reading books about oceans, rivers and the water cycle

We are looking forward to diving into this exciting topic and discovering more about the world’s water! 🌊✨
