Year 1 Literacy – Autumn Term Overview

Welcome to Year 1! In the Autumn Term, we build on the early foundations from Reception, focusing on developing confidence and independence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Here's a look at what your child will be learning in Literacy this term:

Reading

  • Phonics: Daily phonics lessons continue using "Little Wandle", helping children to  lend and segment sounds for reading and writing.

  • Decodable Books: Children read books that match their phonics knowledge to build fluency and confidence.

  • Reading Comprehension: Through group reading and story time, we explore a wide range of stories, poems, and non-fiction texts. Children begin to answer simple questions and discuss characters and events.

  •

Writing

  • Sentence Skills: We begin writing full sentences using capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops.

  • Handwriting: Focus is placed on correct letter formation and pencil grip.

  • Creative Writing: Children are encouraged to make steps towards writing simple stories, recounts, and descriptions inspired by books, experiences, and class topics.

  • Spelling: Weekly spelling focuses on common exception words and phonics patterns.

Speaking and Listening

  • Class Discussions: We develop speaking skills through sharing ideas, answering questions, and retelling stories.

  • Drama and Role Play: These activities support language development and help children express themselves confidently.

How You Can Help at Home:

  • Listen to your child read daily and talk about the story together.

  • Practise weekly spellings and tricky words.

  • Encourage your child to write for real purposes – shopping lists, cards, or labels.

  • Share and enjoy books together, talking about characters and events.

We’re excited to support your child’s Literacy journey this year – thank you for being part of it!
