➕ Spring 1 Overview – Year 1

Theme: White Rose Maths 🔢✨

This half term, Year 1 will be learning maths through the White Rose Maths scheme. Children will deepen their understanding of numbers and develop confidence with counting, place value, and simple addition and subtraction.


🧮 What We Are Learning

During Spring 1, children will be learning to:

  • Count, read, and write numbers within 20

  • Understand place value, including tens and ones

  • Compare numbers using language such as greater than, less than, and equal to

  • Use number lines and objects to represent numbers

  • Add and subtract numbers within 20 using practical resources

  • Solve simple number problems and explain their thinking

Learning will be hands-on and practical, using concrete resources, pictorial representations, and discussion to support understanding.


🛠️ Skills We Are Developing

Children will develop important mathematical skills, including:

  • Number sense – understanding how numbers are made and how they relate to each other

  • Reasoning skills – explaining how they know an answer is correct

  • Problem-solving skills – applying maths to different situations

  • Fluency – becoming quicker and more confident with number facts

  • Mathematical language – using correct vocabulary when talking about maths


🗣️ Vocabulary We Are Using

Children will be encouraged to use mathematical vocabulary such as:

number, count, tens, ones, place value, more, less, equal, add, subtract, total, difference, number line


🏠 How You Can Support at Home

You can help your child by:

  • Practising counting forwards and backwards to 20

  • Talking about numbers you see every day (house numbers, prices, buses)

  • Using objects at home to practise simple addition and subtraction

  • Asking your child to explain how they worked something out

  • Playing number games such as board games or card games
