This term we are learning about:
Maths
Year 6 are working hard in their maths. We approach each lesson with a quick 10 arithmetic followed by White Rose challenges across all areas of maths. We have been looking at different methods and how best to answer questions, sharing ideas for our working out and the quickest methods.
Monday - number focus
Tuesday - fractions
Wednesday - arithmetic methods
Thursday - calculation
Friday - measures
Reading
Skimming and scanning techniques to find the information quickly.
How to infer meaning from the text that is not obvious and how to word answers to questions more effectively to get more marks.
We are also focusing on improving our vocabulary by analysing the words used in the text.
Our text this term continues to be Who let the Gods out by Maz Evans.
Writing
Our writing this half term coincides with a new book called Rose Blanche by Roberto Innocenti and is set during World war Two. We are going to use this picture book to write diary entries as Rose, a German girl, who discovers a concentration camp in her village. We will also learn more about The Holocaust and the Second World War to produce newspaper and non-chronological reports on.
Science
Our topic this half term is Electricity.
We will be revising how to put electrical circuits togethers and the components that are needed for successful circuits.
Geography and History
We are looking at teaching the foundation subjects in isolation this year, to focus more on the skills involved in each curriculum strand.
Our geography this half term is focusing on Tour UK. We are focusing on Cuba and Indonesia. We will be comparing these islands and looking at how they combat natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
In history, we are looking at modern civilisations, specifically the British Empire and how they colonised across the world to become the largest empire in history.
Spellings
Spelling tests take place each week on a Friday.
These spellings are words from the Y5/6 spelling lists as well as words to help learn spelling rules and patterns. The last 5 each week tend to be related to a theme like the weather.
