This term we are learning about:
Maths
Year 6 are getting ready for their SATS this half term. We approach each lesson with a quick 10 arithmetic followed by reasoning problems from past papers. We have been looking at different methods and how best to answer questions, sharing ideas for our working out and the quickest methods.
Reading
Skimming and scanning techniques to find the information quickly. How to infer meaning from the text that is not obvious and how to word answers to questions more effectively to get more marks.
We are also focusing on improving our vocabulary by analysing the words used in the text as well as looking at past papers in preparation for SATS.
We will also be revising grammar and spelling. We are using past papers to find tricky questions on things like the progressive tense and parenthesis. We have also created our own revision mind maps to help focus on each area of grammar and test our own knowledge and understanding.
Writing
Our writing will continue after SATS.
Science
Our topic this half term is a mix of topics including evolution, variation, natural selection and drugs and lifestyle.
Geography and History
We are looking at teaching the foundation subjects in isolation this year, to focus more on the skills involved in each curriculum strand.
Our geography this half term is focusing on climates, in particular a Mediterranean climate in Greece.
In history, we are looking at the Norman Conquest and what this looked like in Britain, covering different battles between those seeking the throne.
Spellings
Spelling tests take place each week on a Friday.
These spellings are words that have been on the previous Y6 SATS for the grammar paper. Please practise them carefully and look at the rules being revised as they will no doubt also come up on your SATS this year.
