This term we are learning about:

Maths

Year 6 are working hard in their maths. We approach each lesson with a quick 10 arithmetic followed by White Rose challenges across all areas of maths. We have been looking at different methods and how best to answer questions, sharing ideas for our working out and the quickest methods.

Monday - number focus - fractions, ratio, scaling.

Tuesday - fractions - decimal, percentage and fraction equivalents.

Wednesday - arithmetic methods - test-style questions.

Thursday - calculation - BODMAS and algebra.

Friday - measures - regular polygons, nets, circles and quadrants.

Reading

Skimming and scanning techniques to find the information quickly.

How to infer meaning from the text that is not obvious and how to word answers to questions more effectively to get more marks.

We are also focusing on improving our vocabulary by analysing the words used in the text.

We will be focussing on extracts this term.

Writing

Our writing this half term is based on the Michael Morpurgo story 'Kensuke's Kingdom'. We will be using the text to inspire setting descriptions, character descriptions, diaries and narrative writing.

Science

Our topic this half term is Light

We will be learning about how we see objects, shadows, refraction of light and light pollution.

Geography and History

We are looking at teaching the foundation subjects in isolation this year, to focus more on the skills involved in each curriculum strand.

Our Geography this half term is focusing on Geography for Life. We will be researching and discussing environmental issues, such as deforestation, and careers in the field of Geography that might interest us in the future.

In History, we are leaning about the lives of Significant People and why they are considered significant in history. We will be learning about the lives and legacies of Winston Churchill and Malala Yousaf.

Spellings

Spelling tests take place each week on a Friday.

These spellings are words from the Y5/6 spelling lists as well as words to help learn spelling rules and patterns. The last 5 each week tend to be related to a theme like the weather.
