This half term, we will be learning about textiles by designing and making our own hand puppets using a running stitch.

  • Learning and using a simple running stitch
  • Exploring ways to join fabric

Through our D.T lessons, children will be developing:

• Practical skills – cutting, shaping, joining and finishing materials
• Sewing skills – threading and using a running stitch
• Design skills – drawing and labelling ideas clearly
• Problem-solving – making choices about materials and techniques
• Evaluation – reflecting on their work and suggesting improvements
• Creativity – designing unique and imaginative puppets

🏡 How You Can Support at Home

You can support your child’s D.T learning with simple activities:

• 🧵 Practise threading using string and beads or large needles (with supervision)
• ✂️ Encourage cutting and crafting with different materials
• 🎨 Draw and design ideas for toys or puppets
• 🧸 Look at toys at home and talk about how they are made
• 🪡 Try simple sewing such as stitching card or fabric (with support)
• 💬 Talk about their designs – ask who it is for and how it will be used
