We are extremely fortunate to have Mrs Sweet supporting in our class. She will be concentrating on specific areas of the curriculum with small groups and individuals during the afternoons.

Year 5 Spring Timetable

To further develop their World country knowledge, Year 5 often visit the website 'GLOBLE'. Here, you guess the 'country of the day', using the closest guessed country to try another. This can be played at home too and will really help learn the spellings of countries around the world.

This term, we will be learning about:

Maths

Each day during the week, we will concentrate on a different aspect of maths. Over this term, we will cover:

Monday - Number - negative numbers, Roman numerals, decimals, percentages and their equivalent fractions. 

Tuesday - Fractions - Adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, multiplying fractions by an integer and fractions of amounts.

Wednesday - Big Maths 

Thursday - Calculation - prime numbers, squared and cubed numbers and multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. 

Friday - Measurement - measuring angles with a protractor, drawing angles, calculating angles on a straight line and around a point, triangles, quadrilaterals and regular and irregular polygons. 

Writing  

This half term, we will looking at the text 'Friend or Foe' by Michael Morpurgo. We will be completing a range of writing including a diary entry, informal letter, balanced argument, instruction texts and poetry.

 

 

Reading

Our reading VIPERS novel this term is 'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell Boyce.

Each week, we will focus on a different reading comprehension skill. We use VIPERS to remember the comprehension skills. 

Science

 

Our topic this half term is SPACE.

 

Our learning will look at the solar system, planets including Earth, night and day and the Moon. 

We will also be using modelling to compare the size of the planets.

Topic

Geography

In Geography this half term our topic is 'The World'   where we will be labelling continents, oceans, hemispheres, time zones and we will be comparing Russia and Brazil, looking at their physical and human geography features.

History

In History this half term our topic is 'Modern History' and we will be exploring the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor.

Families have been sent home with a login for the Accelerated Reader - Home Connect site. This provides information on your child's progress in Accelerated Reader quizzes that they take at home.

It is extremely important that ALL children bring a water bottle into school everyday.

HOMEWORK:

- Please practise each week's spellings. We will look through the spellings each Friday and the pupils will be tested on them the following week. Please use the slides below to help with your practise at home. 

 

- Times table Rockstars. Practise your times tables using your login and username. 

 

- BIG MATHS - Big Maths sheets are completed every Wednesday in school. These will be brought home. Please look through these sheets with your child and go over any skills that they are unsure of. 

 

- Continue to read as much as you can at home. Remember to complete an AR quiz when you get back into school.
